We have taken the example of a 5KVA inverter and 5KVA generator for a fair comparison of Inverter vs Generator. We will compare all details of the inverter and generator in this Inverter vs Generator debate. Refrigerators, TV, and washing machines can run on both inverters as well as generators. Let’s see which is better between the generator and the inverter.

A 5KVA generator of any brand costs ₹1,50,000 whereas a 5KVA inverter (We have taken Luminos) with 6 batteries costs ₹1,30,000. One hour consumption of a diesel inverter is 1.6 ltr. An inverter is used 60% in 2 hours on full power. The price of diesel is ₹80/ltr and the price of electricity is ₹8/unit. The current price of diesel is ₹100/ltr. The price of electricity might vary from city to city. Do consider this. Some parts of the generator get damaged once a year.

Now let us assume that there is a daily power cut of 2hrs and thus you need a power backup for 2 hrs. According to this, the yearly operational cost of a generator is ₹93,400 whereas that of the inverter is ₹23,360. For instance, a 150Ah battery gets 60% discharged in 2 hrs.

Then we need to charge 90Ah of every battery which is 1188W or 1.2KW. The power consumed is 1080W. We will also add the 15% loss which now becomes 1242W. For 6 batteries it is 7452W i.e 7.45KW. All appliances including the washing machine, fan, and fridge can be operated on a 5KVA inverter and generator. Like there is no difference between 5Kg cotton and 5Kg iron and similarly, a 5KVA inverter and a 5KVA generator are the same.

The engine of diesel generators requires service from time to time. Its oil and air filters must be replaced. It requires lubricant too. Now all these totals to ₹10,000. Inverter’s service cost is approx ₹1,500. This ₹1500 is overall service charges including wires, water, or any error. The generator’s total cost is ₹6,27,200 and that of the inverter is ₹2,48,300.

COST AFTER 5 YEARS- Inverter vs Generator

Now we will check for 6 years as after 5 years batteries of the inverter must be changed. The cost of batteries is ₹1,00,000. The total cost for 6 years is ₹3,48,300. An inverter is 48% cheaper than a diesel generator. Buying an inverter can save money.

Pros and Cons- Inverter vs Generator

It is quite noisy and the operational cost of a generator is very high. Fuel prices are changing which is ₹100/L in the present day. This is the biggest con of a generator. The inverter can’t be used for longer hours like 24hrs as it has its maximum capacity. But the inverter works fantastically for small power cuts of 2, 6, or 8 hrs. A diesel generator never works below the consumption level of 1.6L/hour. Consumption will be the same for a bulb or complete 5KVA consumption. This is the biggest con of the generator. The inverter uses only the required power.

Generators are noisier than inverters. Inverters do make noise but that is bearable. These figures are subject to change as per your usage. We have calculated average figures. With all these facts, now the choice is completely yours.
